Bog River to Lows Lake
Lows Lake features a large Common Loon population. The bog area bordered by Hitchins Pond has Boreal Species and late summer migratory shorebirds. Thrushes and Wood Warblers can be found along the river. Look for Bald Eagles, Ducks, Osprey, Barred Owls, and Great Heron.

Cedar River Flow & River
On the Flow, paddlers should see Common Loon, Mallard, Hooded and Common Mergansers, Osprey, Herring Gull, and Pied-billed Grebe and Common Snipe. Red-tailed Hawks and Common Ravens nest to the northwest of the Flow. Approximately 3 miles to the lean-to on the right bank of the river. Paddle a little farther before running beaver dams and small rapids. Along the river are hardwoods on the left and a swamp/bog on the right. Look for Olive-sided Flycatchers, Gray Jays, Wood Warblers, Northern Parula, and Boreal Chickdees.

Ferd’s Bog
The trail to the bog is only .3 miles. Watch for Boreal Birds along the trail. Listen for American Three-toed or Black-backed Woodpeckers. Wood Warblers inhabit the hardwoods by the parking are and along the trail. On the boardwalk at the end of the trail, look for Gray Jays, Olive-sided and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, Nashville Warbler, Northern Parula and Palm Warbler, and Lincoln's, Swamp, and White-throated Sparrows. There are Great Blue Herons beyond the tall pines to the north. Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds occupy old woodpecker holes along the brook.

Lake Lila
There is a nesting pair of Osprey on the lakeshore and Common Loons on the lake. This location is best seen from the water as blowdown is abundant. Wood Warblers can be found on the shoreline and Boreal Birds inhabit much of the area. Cape May Warblers, Spruce Grouse.

Moose River Plains Recreational Area
A 25-mile dirt road bisects the extensive state-owned forest which contains sub-alpine mountain habitat, lowland boreal and hardwood forests, open plains and wetlands. Look for boreal species along the main road or on one of the many side trails that lead to remote lakes and ponds—pick up a map at one of the entrance stations. Hike up to the Wakely Mountain firetower or explore nearby Cedar River Flow by canoe for more birding opportunities.

Pillsbury Mountain Trail
Look for boreal species along the dirt road and Warblers on the trail to the summit fire tower. Boreal Chickadee, Bicknell’s Thrush in the high-elevation zone.

Powley Road – Powley Place
This dirt road is lightly-traveled and can be walked and birded along its entire length for a wide variety of birds. About eight miles down the road is Powley Place, and on the left side of the road is aneat bog where two American Three-toed Woodpeckers were seen in 2000.

Route 10 - Powley Road Loop
South of Piseco Lake. Excellent birding area along the West Branch of the Sacandaga River where Route 10 parallels a meandering flatwater, marshes and bogs. Wintering Crossbills. The river can be paddled from where Route 10 crosses the river near Chub Lake to Shaker Place take-out. A loop trip using Powley Road adds more boreal birding opportunities along a remote dirt road.

Sabattis Bog
Look for a small open bog mat with scatterd, stuned spruces on the north side of Circle Rd. Many interesting northern birds can be found here, including Gray Jay in the taller spruce-balsam. Palm Warbler and Lincoln's Sparrow can be often heard singing during the early summer. The forest along the road has a variety of songbirds, look for Spruce Grouse along the shoulder.

Nature trails and boardwalks traverse a variety of habitats and three types of wetlands along a flatwater section of the Sacandaga River. Launch site.

Silver Lake Wilderness – West River Rd.
Enter the Silver Lake Wilderness on the Northville-Lake Placid Trail at Whitehouse. Look for Woodpeckers, Flycatchers and Thrushes. Look for Philadelphia Vireos where West River Road parallels the river.

South Inlet, Raquette Lake
The waterway is good Boreal Habitat. Look for Wood Warblers, American bittern. The mile-long foot trail on the right side of the dam goes through large hardwoods to the Sagamore Rd and is good for Warblers and other summer songsters.

William C. Whitney Wilderness Area - Little Tupper Lake
The extensive wetland habitat includes Little Tupper Lake and Lake Lila plus 10 smaller ponds. Explore by canoe or walk on old logging roads. Another bog is located near the end of Sabattis Road. Walk northeast along the railroad tracks into the center of the bog.

Fulton Chain of Lakes Area
Boreal forests and wetland habitats including hundreds of lakes and ponds. Off- road birding on trails in the Pigeon Lake Wilderness Areas or just around Moss Lake. Take to the water for even more birding opportunities. Try birding along South Shore Road between Inlet and Old Forge, or drive out towards Big Moose and Stillwater Reservoir, known for its large nesting loon population.
