Immunization

Immunization is Important for all Ages

Immunizations are for people of all ages. From newborns to senior citizens, timely immunizations are one of the most important ways for people to protect themselves and others from serious diseases. Adults need to make certain they have received all of their childhood vaccinations and stay up-to-date with the vaccinations that are recommended for adults. All college students attending school in New York State are required to be immunized against measles, mumps and rubella. It is also recommended that first year college students living in dormitories be immunized against meningitis. Travelers to foreign countries may need additional vaccines where diseases exist that are not common in the U.S., such as typhoid fever and yellow fever.

Child Immunization

The New York State Department of Health Immunization Program's goal is to prevent vaccine-preventable diseases by making sure children and adults receive the vaccines they need. The program assures:

• All children have access to vaccines

• Health care providers are aware of immunization standards of practice

• The latest recommendations on new vaccines are available to providers

• Providers and the public have up-to-date answers to vaccine questions.

Adult Immunization

You never outgrow the need for vaccines. The specific immunizations you need as an adult are determined by factors such as your age, lifestyle, high-risk conditions, type and locations of travel, and previous immunizations. Throughout your adult life, you need immunizations to get and maintain protection against: flu, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, shingles, pneumococcal, HPV, etc.

Travel Immunizations

If you are planning travel outside of the United States, don't wait to look into immunization!  Travel vaccinations take a minimum of four to six weeks to complete, so make arrangements to receive the immunizations you need as soon as you can.  Hamilton County Public Health provides routine immunizations, but does not provide travel immunizations.  Please see below for clinics where you may make arrangements to receive travel immunizations.
